The Hollywood Reporter described it as a “surprisingly maternal horror movie that relies as much on fraying emotional bonds as supernatural suspense to create tension.” The film was a favorite among critics, and Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times even ranked it as the sixth-best film of 2016. Once again, Sandberg proved that blood and gore aren’t necessary to scare an audience, as Light Out packs all of its most intense moments into a PG-13 rating. The premise itself, which centers on a demon that can only attack in the dark, has a lot of potential, and Sandberg shows that it can retain its inherent terror throughout a feature film. Both actresses give phenomenal performances that add depth to a complex familial relationship. In another film about the nature of grief, Lights Out follows the young woman Rebecca (Teresa Palmer) as she digs into the illnesses that haunted her mother, Sophie (Maria Bello).

It’s often the case that a great short film doesn’t merit the expansion to a theatrical length, but Sandberg had the insight on how to shape Lights Out into a narrative that could justify the longer running time. Related: Every Movie in The Conjuring Universe, Ranked Sandberg does a great job at expanding the mythology of The Conjuring franchise without straying from the narrative he’s telling, and the film refreshingly avoids the cheap jump scares that are so often found in modern horror films. The film shows how the dollmaker Samuel Mullins (Anthony LaPaglia) and his wife Esther (Mirando Otto) channel their heartbreak of their daughter’s death into the powers that curse the Annabelle doll. Sandberg has understood since his earliest short film projects that the best horror films are about grief, and framing an Annabelle story as one of grieving parents was a brilliant decision. Annabelle: Creation ditches its predecessor’s story all together and shows the origin story of the titular doll.

However, Sandberg proved that the spinoff series had potential with his excellent prequel. While The Conjuring films had proven to be some of the scariest and most thrilling horror films in recent memory, the 2014 Annabelle spinoff felt like nothing but a cheap cash grab that didn’t need to exist.

Fury of the Gods really excels when it prioritizes the bond between the siblings. That being said, the film ultimately finds a positive message by showing that there’s room for independence within a family.
In fact, the film is at its best when Billy Batson (Asher Angel) is a kid who struggles with the fact that he is growing up.
The plotline involving the villainous Greek gods simply isn’t that interesting or well-explained, despite the engaged performances from Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu. Those looking for epic battles between gods and monsters were able to find them in the Wonder Woman and Aquaman franchises Shazam! occupied a completely different side of the DCEU.
While the sequel certainly has more action, humor, and characters than its predecessor, it lacks the same small-scale approach that made the first Shazam! so charming. The film has a lot of charm to it, but it showed that in some cases, bigger does not mean better. Shazam! Fury of the Gods isn’t a bad film by any stretch of the imagination, and its low ranking should only indicate the overall quality of Sandberg’s output.
